Fellow Porter Pilots,
This week we’re continuing our Meet the OC series, where we’re introducing you to different members of the Porter Organizing Committee, sharing our personal stories about why we so strongly believe Porter pilots should join the 95% of professional pilots across Canada in ALPA.
As you’ll see, we all have different reasons and stand united in our common cause. Share your reason why with us and submit your card today.

Andrew Axson, Dash 8 Captain, YTZ
My name is Andrew Axson and I am a YTZ based Dash 8 captain. I was hired by Porter in
2018 through the Destination Porter program. Outside of work, I enjoy traveling, camping, and pretending that I know what I’m doing with the sails on our sailboat.
Porter attracted me because of the strong culture and great work-life balance. During my time at Porter, I’ve had the opportunity to serve as a Jumpseat Coordinator and participate in the development of the Flywell pilot assistance program.
Through these experiences, I was first introduced to the resources and inter-carrier collaboration available within ALPA. At the same time, the growing pains of expansion began to appear through things such as reduced fleet transfers, leadership changes, adjustments to the corporate structure, seniority issues, increased payroll issues, emails going unanswered, and an ever-changing FOAG document.
These issues impact our quality of life, and it is disheartening to see our peers move on to other carriers. This is not to say that the FOAG committee is not trying its best or that the company is maliciously undermining us. It’s simply a function of the expansion from a small regional carrier to a large North America-wide carrier. There are limited resources as the company is focused on the development and expansion of Porter.
The world and industry are changing at an accelerated pace. For these reasons, it is important that we work with Porter management to establish a contract which will bring stability and protections for the pilot group. This will serve as a retention and attraction tool for the company while increasing the bandwidth to address pilot group concerns.
In short, it is time that we: gain access to increased resources; build upon the collaborative relationship that has been fostered through the FOAG process; and unite ourselves under Part 1 of the Canada Labour Code to work towards a more stable future. It is time we join ALPA.
One of the things that I’ve enjoyed most about the last few years here at Porter is the opportunity to connect with and get to know many of you. I look forward to continued opportunities to do so. If anyone would like to discuss things further, my number is 807-356-1526.

Laurence Charette, E2 First Officer, BASE
I joined Porter as a First Officer on the Q400 almost 7 years ago. I’ve been a First Officer on the E2 for a year and a half. When I’m not flying, I am outside in the
mountains and spend my time hiking, camping, biking, skiing, snowshoeing and more.
In 2021, I unexpectedly lost my aviation medical. I was swimming in a sea of uncertainty for almost a year, until a friend familiar with ALPA aeromedical resources put me in contact with a CAME, who helped me get my medical back and navigate the many Transport Canada hoops.
Those resources (medical, legal, etc.) are the kind we all hope we will never need, but we are happy we have them if we end up needing them. Going through this made me realize just how much ALPA can do for pilots. They have expertise in safety, scheduling, negotiating and more.
Porter is an amazing company to work for, and we would collectively benefit from ALPA’s knowledge and resources to make it an even better workplace. Over 11,000 pilots in Canada are represented by ALPA.
It is time for us to join them.
